Many people are familiar with the beauty of its purple hues. Amethyst is a variation of quartz that contains trace amounts of iron. When the mineral is exposed to radioactive gamma rays, it is irradiated, producing the purple color we know and love. The saturation of the amethyst depends on the amount of iron present.
